Why Text Is the Easier Door

Text is asynchronous and forgiving. You can rewrite a clumsy sentence before sending it. She can answer between things, on her schedule. Neither of you has to worry about lighting, background noise or what your face is doing. All the pressure that makes first video calls awkward simply is not there.

It is also honest in a useful way: with nothing but words, the conversation itself has to be interesting. If it is, video will be too.

Opening Messages That Work

• "Your profile says photography — phone camera or a real one?"
• "I need a tiebreaker: best food from your country, one answer only."
• "You look like you have strong opinions about music. Prove me right."

The pattern behind all three: they refer to her, they are easy to answer, and they invite an opinion rather than a yes/no. Pick a profile from girls online and write your own version — borrowed lines always read borrowed.

What Not to Send

• Explicit messages or photos, especially early. It ends conversations instantly.
• Your phone number, address or workplace — or requests for hers.
• Anything about money, in either direction. That includes "help" requests you might receive: never send money to someone you have only met online.
• Ten follow-ups when one message has not been answered yet.

Building Comfort, Then Momentum

Good text threads have rhythm: question, answer, a bit of you, a bit of her. Match her pace and length roughly — three paragraphs to her three words means the balance is off. When the thread is genuinely moving, suggest the next step once, lightly.
